ArchitekturZeit

When I was younger, I considered becoming an architect. It seems like such a glamorous job: You get to design things that are highly visible and solid, much unlike the indiscernible fabric of software that runs inside our computers. On the other hand, planning buildings does not scale: Software is written once and can be sold and used by many times over, without modification. Software won.

Still, my interest in all things architecture is very much alive. Happily, twice a year, the thesis projects of graduating architecture students are shown in the main building of ETH.

There are usually three or four projects for students to choose from. This year, these are the design of a villa in a fancy Zurich district and trade show hall in St. Gallen. This semester's urban planning project is the use of land next to Zurich main station that was formerly owned and used by the Swiss railways.

There are usually a few designs that really stand out: The ones I usually like have a unique, surprising, even wacky idea, and, more importantly, excellent presentation: I want great models, thrilling pictures, and tasty eye candy. Architecture is visual art: Please, by all means, make it pretty!

The exhibit continues until February 11. ETH Hauptgebäude, Rämistrasse 101, CH-8001 Zürich

Architecture is really fascinating, actually I had the same plans when I was young. Another story where rationality overcomes passion? Nevertheless I think you chose the right thing :)
